Abstract: The administrative, service, and event records of ONE in Long Beach Incorporated, 1986-2009. Alternately referred to as The
Center/Long Beach, the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Center, or the Gay and Lesbian Center of Greater Long Beach, the organization
provides advocacy, health, legal, and social services to the LGBT community in the Long Beach area.
Administrative History
ONE in Long Beach originated in 1977 from informal living room discussions of lesbian and gay issues. Incorporated in 1980,
the organization has provided advocacy, health, legal, and social services to the LGBT community in the greater Long Beach
area, including support groups, youth services, legal assistance, smoking cessation programs, employment referrals, hate crime
assistance, mental health referral, women’s health programs, cultural and social activities (including a Film Festival), educational
forums, and HIV prevention and support programs. In 1984, the agency created the first case management service in Southern
Los Angeles County exclusively for gay men with HIV and AIDS. In 1986, the organization moved into its new home in central
Long Beach. In 1987, the agency held AIDS Walk Long Beach which continues today as a separate foundation. The organization
is alternately referred to as The Center/Long Beach, the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Center, or the Gay and Lesbian Center
of Greater Long Beach.
