J. J. Markey and San Luis Rey Historical Society Papers and Photographs, 1952-1959, Braun Research Library Collection, Autry Museum of the American West, Los Angeles; MS.1319; [folder number] [folder
title][date].
Deposited to the Library from Ruth D. Simpson or M. R. (Mark Raymond) Harrington, circa 1964
Dr. J. J. (Joseph James) Markey (1897 May 31 - 1985 December) was a physician who had served in World War I and was an amateur
archaeologist. In 1957, Markey was the president of the San Luis Rey Historical Society and gave lectures and led field trips
in Southern California. Markey wrote in his biographical history that he directed archaeological expeditions in California,
China, Java, Germany, France, England, Morocco, and Tahiti between 1924 and 1955, although he did not hold a degree in archaeological
studies.
This collection includes newspaper clippings of various archaeological exploits of Dr. J. J. Markey in Southern California
from 1952-1957, as well as bulletins and field trip announcements from the San Luis Rey Historical Society. Photographs in
this collection feature archaeological sites, artifacts, artwork, sculpture, newspaper articles, and people, including Dr.
J. J. Markey, painter Eileen Herbster, and sculptor George Stromer. Some photographs feature members of the San Luis Rey
Historical Society in a chemistry lab, and other photographs feature society members at archaeological sites with metal detectors.
Some of the photographs have "Search for Buried Treasure" written on the verso. Photographs of George Stromer feature him
sculpting a human head from a found skull, as well as photographs of the finished sculpture.
Initial processing by Braun Library staff. Finding aid completed completed by Holly Rose Larson, NHPRC Processing Archivist,
