    Abstract: The Leonard John Gates papers (SAFR 14032, HDC 38) is comprised of 18 documents spanning the years 1848, 1879,1883-1889. Documents include letters of reference regarding job performance on the KIMBERLEY (steam schooner) and MOUNT EDGECUMBE (steam schooner) as well as other jobs, agreement, and certificates of discharge. This collection has been processed to the collection level and is open for use without restrictions.

    This collection was transferred from Golden Gate National Recreation Area to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    The KIMBERLY was a three masted screw steamer built in 1884. Constructed of iron, gross weight of 3740 tons, measuring 350' x 41' x 33.6'. She was built by W. Hamilton & Co in Glasgow, Scotland. Home port was Glasgow. Noted in Lloyds Register as abandoned by its owners in December, 1887. Around 1889, the ship was sold to the Southern Pacific RR Co. Fate thereafter unknown, either abandoned or renamed.
    The MOUNT EDGECUMBE was also a screw steamer, built in 1883. Iron hulled and with a gross weight of 1343 tons, measuring 260' x 38' x 17'. Built in Barrow, England, by the Barrow Shipbuilding Company (later, Vickers), and was owned by the Mount Edgcumbe SS Company. Home port was Plymouth.
