    Scope and Content

West Park Tract, originally owned by Vail & Crane, comprised the area between 39th and 49th Streets, bordered by Vermont Ave. on the east, and Normandie Ave. on the west. Running through the tract east to west were Leighton and Browning Sts., and Santa Barbara Blvd. (now Martin Luther King Blvd.); north/south streets included Raymond, Budlong, and Walton Sts. The photographs document Craftsman-style bungalows, as well as many large Craftsman-style homes, resplendent in their timber frames, dark shingles, wide porches, cobblestone porch supports and facades, and elaborate gables and dormers. Several of the photographs include people and animals: a boy leading his pony, a group of ladies sitting on their front steps in long full skirts, high-necked blouses and broad hats, various family dogs standing on the porch or lying in the driveway. Two interior shots reveal a living room and parlor, paneled in wood, with beamed ceilings, and built-in hutches. Three of the houses are identified in captions: the ones at the corner of Budlong and Leighton, and Budlong and Browning, are still standing today; a third, at 4106 Walton St., may have been demolished to make way for the Manual Arts High School. Other views include the bus stop at the corner of Budlong and Santa Barbara, and two long vistas of Santa Barbara Blvd., planted on either side with pepper trees. Affixed to inside front cover and first leaf are three photographs or photocopies of a tract map of West Park, and an advertisement for the lots, priced at "$900 and up."
