- Biographical / historical:

Maltby was a personal friend of Lincoln. Lincoln appointed him to the position of California Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Maltby wrote The Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln in 1884. Maltby's wife had Lincoln sign this copy in 1864.
