Description
Letters written to "Mother" (B.R. Fitch) and other family members during World War I by Neil R. Fitch, a United States Navy recruit, from San Francisco and the Bay Area military bases of Goat Island and Camp Sims between September 11 and December 1, 1918.
Background
Neil Rutherford Fitch was born on April 17, 1900, in Kearney, Nebraska. He lived and worked as a ranchhand in Gardena, Idaho, prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy in September 1918. Fitch was transferred to Goat Island in San Francisco Bay where he remained under quarantine from September to shortly before Christmas as the 1918 influenza epidemic raged.
