1. LIBRARY RECORDS, 1938-1996

Scope and Content Note

Includes administrative records; applications for reading privileges; event records such as open houses, lectures, book sales and exhibits; collection records; and a large portion of correspondence almost entirely written by Elizabeth Wrigley, library director.
The insurance files are of note for listings of many of the rare books and their appraised values.
A significant part of this series are the letters received from many interested people about the Shakespeare authorship question from 1920s to 1995. The correspondence shows how, over the years, Wrigley developed personal relationships with many of the scholars who were interested in the library. The correspondence with collector R. W. Gibson, who published a bibliography of Bacon in 1950, contains interesting details about specific Bacon works. The correspondence also presents a good record of what the library held, and what they were still buying, seeking and collecting.
There are some attachments of flyers, article reprints, clippings and some photographs with the correspondence. Copies of scholarly articles written by correspondents are filed with their correspondence, as originally organized.
The Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable files contain many articles and reprints regarding the Shakespeare authorship question.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth Wrigley (1915-1997) was associated with the Francis Bacon Library for 50 years, almost the entire time of its existence. Wrigley held bachelor's degrees in Elizabethan literature and library science and was an analyst for U.S. Steel in her native Pittsburgh from 1941 to 1943. Shortly after she and her husband moved to California, they were invited to tea at the Hollywood home of Walter Arensberg. He needed help with his library and in 1944, she went to work for him as a research assistant and rare book cataloger. The next year she was named as an executive and member of the board of the Foundation. By 1959, Wrigley was president of the Foundation and director of the library.
Wrigley was a woman of colorful character known to invite visitors to the library for "coffee at 10 a.m. and tea at 4 p.m." She was extremely knowledgeable about Bacon and the Shakespeare authorship issue, and served on the Board of Advisors of the Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable. Wrigley was also an active member of the American Cryptogram Association, most likely an interest developed in her years working with Walter Arensberg.
In 1958, Wrigley published Short title catalogue numbers in the library of the Francis Bacon Foundation, incorporated, and a supplement in 1967. Due to health issues, she stopped working for the Foundation and library in 1995, and the library closed the same year. She passed away in 1997 at age 81.

4. WALTER AND LOUISE ARENSBERG PAPERS

Scope and Content Note

A significant portion of these papers consists of Walter Arensberg's cryptographic research notes and files, circa 1920 to 1954. His notes demonstrate his conviction that he would eventually unlock the key to the ciphers in Shakespeare's texts despite unsuccessful results and contrary opinion. There are many typescripts by Arensberg, but also research work done by his staff, at his direction. The titles of his research subject files give a good idea of the topics of interest to Arensberg, many related to mythology and symbolism. There are a few letters with private researchers or librarians dealing with specific topics in the subject files. The research work was carried on by the staff for approximately six years after his death in January 1954.
Also included here is personal correspondence with family, friends and other Baconians, and some of Walter's early and experimental poetry.
Walter's letters to Louise in 1923 and 1924 are an account of his first visit to Lichfield, England, where he hoped to convince local authorities of his theory that Bacon was buried there.
The letters of Walter's father, Conrad Christian Arensberg, demonstrate his pride in Walter's books of the 1920s. Letters to his brother Charles F. C. Arensberg, to whom he appeared to be close, contain some accounts from Walter about his Baconian theories. Also of note are letters from Helen Keller (to Charles F. C. Arensberg); writer Henry Miller; film director John Huston; noted World War II cryptologist William F. Friedman; and Clyde Wolfe, a California Institute of Technology professor whom Arensberg hired, along with Friedman, to assist with his cipher work.
Personal items include family photographs, two of Walter Arensberg's passports, medical and financial records, and copies of the Arensbergs' wills.
The collection also includes family photographs of the Arensberg and [Louise] Stevens families, including Walter and Louise.

Photographs were taken approximately 1941-1951 in the Arensbergs' home on Hillside Avenue, Hollywood, for inventory or insurance purposes. The objects are not fully identified. (See the Arensberg Archives, Philadelphia Museum of Art, for the negatives for these prints and more information.)

5. ART AND ARTIFACTS COLLECTION

Scope and Content Note

These items were either collected by the Arensbergs during their lifetimes or acquired by the Francis Bacon Foundation and Library after their deaths. There is little supporting documentation, other than brief descriptions on photocopies of file cards for each item. The original file card descriptions are at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Some items belonged to Isabelle Kittson Brown (indicated below), and were donated with her papers.
Several items were on display in the Francis Bacon Library in Claremont.
The original item numbers and descriptions have been retained for each item. Key to abbreviations in front of numbers: A&A = Archaeological and Anthropological; FA = Library Furnishings - Antique; WA = Works of Art; B = Library "B" list.
NOTE: Descriptive information may not be accurate or reliable. A curator has examined some pieces and found the descriptions were wrong.

Box 142

A&A 9/247  [Metal (bronze?) vessel, very crudely cast. It has a large quantity of rust and hardened soil (?) on its surface. In style of decoration, it evokes the Western Zhou (about 1100 to 771BCE) period. However it is probably not of that vintage. The rusting and its heavy weight seems to indicate some iron in the metal--something that would not be used in the Western Zhou. Iron was used to cast sculpture, etc. later, especially by the Ming and Qing onwards. Was this piece the result of later attempts (i.e. Ming/Qing/modern) to create an antique object? The hardened mud/soil accretions may be an indication of this scenario.] Source: Examination by Huntington Library art curator, 2013.

A&A 11/279 [Blue and white dragon Bowl with foot rim and flattened mouth-rim glazed in brown with incised patterns. Most likely stoneware. The painting of two confronting dragons is quite nicely done in a practiced and easy manner. The use of dark brown glaze however is mindful of Southeast Asian ceramics, perhaps Vietnamese (?), rather than Chinese pieces. Possibly 19th century.] Source: Examination by Huntington Library art curator, 2013.
