Scope and Content of Collection

An assembled collection of photographs of ancient inscriptions, predominently Greek and Roman, with Athenian inscriptions constituting the largest portion of the collection. The majority of these modern prints were acquired from the American School of Classical Studies in Athens; sources for the remainder include commercial vendors such as Alinari, Photographie Giraudon, Barbara Bini, Guntram Koch, the Antonio Giuliano collection in the Gabinetto fotografico nazionale (Rome), and Roberto Sigismondi; the two major sources for prints of inscriptions from the western part of the Roman Empire are the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg and the Rheinisches Bildarchiv Köln. The collection also contains a few images transferred from the repository's Giovanni Becatti archive.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1974, the J. Paul Getty Museum began assembling a "photo library" by consolidating the visual resources of each existing curatorial department. By the early 1980s, the Photo Archive was actively acquiring large collections of photographs from commercial and private sources and scholars' archives that contained a photographic component. In 1983, the nearly one million photographs of the Photo Archive were incorporated into the Research Institute's Special Collections.

Arrangement
