Administrative History:

Betty Ann Wagner grew up on a farm in Danville Iowa where her family attended the Methodist Church. She and her sister Juanita had a brief pen pal exchange with Anne Frank in 1940. The Wagner girls were given her name by their teacher Miss Matthews who had gathered names of schoolchildren while on vacation in Europe in the summer of 1939. The exchange was brief and the Wagner girls did not know of its importance until many years later.

Betty Ann taught in a one room schoolhouse in 1945, went into the cement block manufacturing business in 1946 and moved to California with her mom and sister the same year, where Betty Ann worked at a men’s’ clothing shop in Pasadena and then at Aerojet, in Azusa. Learning of a need for English tutoring for international students at Fuller Seminary, she volunteered. In 1955 she became a secretary at Jack MacArthur’s Church and for his radio program.

By 1960 she knew that she wanted to be involved in Christian missions. She worked as an aide to Bob Pierce at the beginning of his Samaritan’s Purse ministry. In 1979 she founded Wayfarers Ministry. In 1988 the sale of her pen pal letters from Anne Frank (now on display at the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Belt Hashoah Museum of Tolerance) helped build an office for the ministry. Wayfarers has supported hundreds of missionaries around the world, as well as international students preparing for ministry in the US.
