Scope and Content Note

This series contains four albums with photographs documenting the construction of the first dam built at Aswan, between 1899 and 1903, as well as the barrage built downstream at Asyut (Assuit) between 1899 and 1903, and subsequent improvements made to the dam and repairs to the temples at Philae between 1903 and 1906.
The photographs in Album 4 were removed from their bindings prior to arrival at The Huntington.

Scope and Content

This presentation album contains 31 photographs, with an eight-page printed preface by W. E. Garstin, the under secretary of state for public works in Egypt, signed at end, “Cairo, 1902.” The front flyleaf has manuscript inscription “W. L. Lowe Brown,” the resident engineer at the Asyut Barrage. Identical contents as Album 2.

Scope and Content

This presentation album has 31 black-and-white photographs, with eight introductory pages of explanatory notes by W. E. Garstin, the under secretary of state for public works in Egypt, signed “Cairo, 1902.” Photographs are signed by D.S. George. Flyleaf has bookplate inscribed to John Aird: “A Monsier J. Aird Souvenir de l’Inauguration des Résevoirs du Nil. De la part du Ministre des Travaux Publics.” Identical contents as Album 1.

Scope and Content

This album originally contained approximately 207 photographs, though 29 photographs are now housed in a box identified as Album 3a. The remaining 177 photographs still in the original album (Album 3b) are typically affixed two to a page, with some panoramas comprised of several taped together photographs. Some of the photographs are by D.S. George, "DM," and Achille Gianny.

This series contains three albums with photographs documenting the construction of the Isna Barrage, located approximately 162 kilometers north of the Aswan Dam on the Nile River below Luxor, in 1907 and 1908. Two of the volumes are copies of the same presentation album and the photographs are accompanied by two introductory pages of printed explanatory notes by Murdoch MacDonald, the director-general of reservoirs in Egypt.

This presentation album contains 21 photographs, and five additional loose prints, with a two-page printed preface. Most photographs are signed by D.S. George. Contains the bookplate of the Egyptian Government inscribed “Inauguration of the Heightening of the Assuan Dam. Dec. 23 1912, presented to Sir John Aird Bart” on the inside front cover.
