This series contains materials on the history of Lick Observatory, including summaries of the observatory's history, promotional materials, information on residential life and activities on Mount Hamilton, materials from observatory programs and events such as the Summer Visitor Program, transcripts of speeches given on the history of the observatory, and anniversary celebration materials. Arrangement

In this series, the chronological set of clippings albums are arranged first, then the numbered volumes by original volume number, with the remaining albums arranged alphabetically by title.

Scope and Contents

This series of scrapbooks includes two sets of clippings albums, one with numbered volumes and one arranged chronologically by date. Both sets were compiled by Lick Observatory staff during the late 1800s and through the mid-to-late 1900s, and contain newspaper clippings and other information on a variety of topics related to the observatory and astronomy. The numbered volumes also contain letters, drawings, photographs, research logs and data, memos, reports, blueprints, diagrams, and notes. Also included in this series are photograph albums from various travel expeditions and an album of collected postage stamps.

This series contains materials donated by Helen Wright used in her research in the writing of the book James Lick's Monument: The Saga of Captain Richard Floyd and the Building of the Lick Observatory. Richard S. Floyd was the president of the Lick Trust and a key figure in the planning and development of the Lick Observatory. These materials contain mostly photocopies, and include papers, correspondence, clippings, photographs, research notes, reports, and maps relating to the Floyd family and the history of the Lick Observatory.
