Abstract: Herbert Eugene Bolton (1870-1953) was an authority on the history of the Americas, especially during the Spanish settlement.
He spent most of his professional career teaching at University of California, Berkeley. This collection consists of clippings
of articles by Herbert Eugene Bolton from 1931, book reviews of Bolton's works from 1921 and 1928, newspaper clippings about
Bolton from 1913-1929, a program for a banquet honoring Bolton from 1945, obituaries and memorials from 1953, and typed manuscripts
of family and friends' memories of Bolton.

Biographical Note
Herbert Eugene Bolton was born July 20, 1870 in Wilton, Wisconsin and died January 30, 1953 in Berkeley, California.
Bolton was an authority on the history of the Americas, especially during the Spanish settlement. Bolton graduated from the
University of Wisconsin 1895. He was a student of Frederick Jackson Turner. Ph.D, from the University of Pennsylvania under
McMasters.
Bolton married Gertrude Janes in 1895, and the couple had one son and four daughters.
From 1901-1909, Bolton was on the faculty of the University of Texas. He spent several years at Stanford and went to the University
of California, Berkeley in 1911. Bolton performed 13 years of research on documents pertaining to United States history in
Mexican archives from which he compiled a large bibliography. Bolton served as the Chairman of the Department of History starting
in 1919 and as the Sather Professor of History from 1931. Bolton was Director of the Bancroft Library beginning in 1936.
Bolton received many prizes and honors, including Lateran Cross of honor from Pope Pius XII. Bolton retired in 1940 but was
recalled, and later taught at San Francisco State College.
