Biography/Administrative History
Herb Caen was a daily columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle for over fifty years, beginning in 1936, interrupted by a
break for military service in World War II (1943-1945) and by an eight-year stint at the San Francisco Examiner during the
1950s. He died of lung cancer on Feb. 1, 1997, at the age of eighty. Caen developed a writing style he dubbed "three-dot journalism,"
consisting of brief musings separated by ellipses.
Scope and Content of Collection
Folder includes 3 p. typescript of column describing Lake Tahoe and its visitors, written towards the end of summer. The
column was published in the San Francisco Chronicle August 31, 1993.
