Biography/Administrative History

Historical Note: The Pride Faculty Staff Association (PFSA) is one of multiple Faculty-Staff Associations (FSA) on campus demonstrating the interests and affiliations of faculty and staff. The PFSA organization is a volunteer member association managed by a board consisting of six members. Activities of the PFSA include Pride events, campus outreach, advocating for equitable policies, and providing education for and about the LGBTQIA communities on campus. Although there was an LGBTQIA presence on campus at an earlier date, 1972 is the first recorded effort to develop a formal presence on campus. In 1972 students began the process of applying for a Gay Student Union (GSU), after some resistance the GSU was granted student club status in 1976. The LGBTQIA Faculty Staff Association was formed in 2012 to “establish and facilitate communication among Cal Poly LGBTQIA faculty, staff, and administrators”, and to advocate for and promote education about the LGBTQIA community. Surveys of faculty and staff were conducted by the FSA between 2012 and 2014 to gauge the interests and needs of the campus community. The association addresses these needs through events, activities, and advocacy. The name of the group was changed, by a vote of the membership, to Pride Faculty Staff Association in September 2014. “The mission of the Cal Poly Pride Faculty Staff Association (PFSA) is to empower and enhance the voices, visibility, presence, and community of faculty, staff, and graduate students of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. The PFSA aims to create a safe and inclusive campus climate and advocate for justice, safety, wellbeing, and equity for all. The PFSA is committed to promoting education, awareness, and advocacy for/of the LGBT+ community within the Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo community. The PFSA recognizes the critical value of diverse perspectives, lives, and identities in enriching the university and working towards social justice.” ~ https://pridefsa.calpoly.edu
