Biographical/Historical note
Domenico (Domingo) Ghirardelli, founded the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company in San Francisco. He was born in Genoa, Italy on
Feb 21, 1817. He arrived in San Francisco in 1849 from Lima, Peru aboard the brig "Mazeppa. He died in 1984 in Rapallo, Italy.
His wife was Carmen Alvarado and they had six children. He established himself in the chocolate business in 1853 with the
opening of Ghirardelli and Girard. The Ghirardelli Company moved to its location on North Point in San Francisco in 1895.
He began to use the Spanish form of his name, Domingo, when he arrived in Peru in 1838.
Ghirardelli was a member of the Society of California Pioneers, the Gariabaldi Guard, the Masons, the Odd Fellows and the
Italian Benevolent Society
