Organizational History
Ecology Action was founded in Berkeley, California in 1968 by Cliff Humphrey and Chuck Herrick to promote an ecological life.
Herrick was killed in an automobile accident later that year but Humphrey and his wife Mary continued the group which initially
focused on education and awareness. In 1969, the Humphreys incorporated the Ecology Action Educational Institute which focused
on the publication and dissemination of information about the environment. In addition, the Humphreys led a number of awareness
raising events including a "Survival Walk," an Ecology Fair and a "Smog Free Locomotion Day". In 1970 they moved the organization
to Modesto, California in order to bring their message to rural agricultural areas. Among other key events of the environmental
movement Ecology Action was active in lobbying for the construction of the New Melones Dam, in direct conflict with a number
of other environmental organizations including the Sierra Club.
