and Design Collection. Art, Design & Architecture Museum; University of California, Santa Barbara.
Russel Ray was born in New Jersey in 1878. He attended Harvard University beginning in 1904 where he studied architecture.
After finishing his degree at Harvard, Ray moved to New York where he started his architectural practice. By 1908, Ray had
relocated to Santa Barbara. He first was associated with the firm of Augustus B. Higginson. When Higginson retired, Russel
Ray bought the practice. In 1913, Ray joined with architect Winsor Soule. Together they designed buildings for the Cate School
in Carpinteria, however their largest commission was the Young Men’s Christian Association building located at 110 West Carrillo
Street in Santa Barbara, California. The building was torn down in 1986.
Winsor Soule was born in New York State in 1883; he earned degrees in architecture at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology. Upon graduation Soule worked as a draftsman for two Bostonian architectural firms before moving to California,
eventually settling in Santa Barbara in 1911.
The Russel Ray and Winsor Soule drawings of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) building spans 3 linear feet and
is dated 1913. The collection is composed of four architectural drawings in the form of reprographic copies. Drawings include:
basement foundation, first and second floor plans, elevations, and exterior elevations.
