Biographical/Historical note

The Historic American Buildings Survey or HABS was founded in 1933 as a division of the United States National Park Service (NPS) and was the nation’s first federal preservation program aimed at documenting America’s architectural heritage. Historic buildings are documented according to the HABS guidelines which involve a combination of architectural drawings, photography, and written history.

Scope and Content note

The Historic American Buildings Survey drawings span 5 linear feet and date from circa 1968 to circa 1983. The collection is composed of photographic reproductions and negatives of architectural drawings as well as architectural drawings in the form of reprographic copies, for the following buildings: American Trona Salt Storage Plant, Barnsdall Park, Freeman house, Dodge house, Horatio West Court Apartments, Los Angeles Public Library, Irwin house, Lovell (Health) house, Richfield Oil Building, Lovell Beach house, Schindler house, Sowden house, Bradbury building, El Cuartel, the Miranda house, a house owned by Mrs. A. L. M. Vhay, and the Yorba-Abadie house, all located in Los Angeles County or Santa Barbara, California.

The American Trona Corporation "Raw Salt Storage" Plant in San Pedro originally built in 1916-17 and is an early examply of a West Coast industrial building.

Barnsdall Park (Los Angeles County, Calif.) 1969

Biographical/Historical note

Barnsdall Park is the former estate of Miss A. Barnsdall desinged by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1917 with some elements designed by R. M. Schindler. The estate was intended to be an extensive complex composed of the Hollyhock house as well as a cultural and arts center. The park is now under the auspices of the City of Los Angeles.

Photographic reproductions and negatives of architectural drawings. Drawings dated 1969 include: plot plan, location plan, lamp details, an isometric aerial drawings from the northwest, and a hilltop plot plan.
