Acquisition Information
SAFR-02175
The negatives in this collection were originally sent from Albert Newman to SAFR's Supervisory Archivist in 2004. They were
held by the Supervisory Archivist until their retirement from SAFR, which was after the donor died on March 17, 2007. The
collection was formally accessioned in September 2011.
Historical or Biographical Note
Albert W. Newman (1920-2007) was a former California and Hawaiian Sugar Company (C&H Co.) refinery worker and boatyard owner
in Vallejo, California.
Albert "Al" William Newman was born July 21, 1920, in Havana, Cuba, to Fred and Fanny Newman. The family immigrated to the
United States in 1926. While growing up in Crockett, California, Al received his first camera on his tenth birthday and continued
to be an avid photographer all his life. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army. Al married Virginia Rice, his high
school sweetheart, in 1943. After his military discharge two years later, Al and Virginia settled in Vallejo, California,
where they raised their five adopted children. After working at the C&H Co. sugar refinery for 35 years, Al retired and started
a second career. He acquired a bankrupt boatyard in Vallejo and turned it into a thriving business. In 1988, Al and his wife
relocated to Shelton, Washington, where he remained until his death on March 17, 2007.

NAPA VALLEY (built 1910; ferry) while underway on San Francisco Bay, California. The collection has been processed to the
Item level and is open for use.
Contains photographs taken by Albert "Al" W. Newman at the age of 14 while traveling aboard NAPA VALLEY (built 1910; ferry)
across San Francisco Bay, California, in 1934. There are 3 black-and-white nitrate negatives which show the San Francisco-Oakland
Bay Bridge under construction in the distance. In one photograph, three passengers are leaning over NAPA VALLEY's railing.
Another photograph shows BERKELEY (built 1898; ferry) passing between NAPA VALLEY and the bridge while the third photograph
shows an unidentified ferry partially in view underway.
