Description
Willie Hunter reminiscences of a voyage on the Margarite (whaling schooner) (SAFR 16493, HDC 215). Under Captain Buddington, in 1908, the MARGARITE sailed from New London, Connecticut to the Antarctic sea and back. Willie Hunter was the cabin boy. There are good descriptions of rendering blubber, watching for whales and the ways in which the crew carried out their duties. Hunter recounts how he was caught stealing pies, hunting for albatross eggs and seeing a volcano. Albert Fielding also wrote an account. The collection is available for use without restriction.
