Biography
Dr. Emil Bogen was a physician and researcher in Los Angeles. He was chief pathologist at Olive View Sanatorium in Sylmar,
California, and was an internationally known tuberculosis expert. He also studied alcoholism and his research contributed
to the invention of the breathalizer.
Scope and Content
This collection chiefly contains the papers, articles, notes, and research material of Dr. Emil Bogen. It also includes printed
material such as off-prints of Bogen's and others' articles from medical journals. The material spans from Bogen's time in
high school until his death in 1962. Subjects include: alcoholism, tuberculosis, the use of streptomycin, death, animal experimentation,
diseases in World War II, hepatitis, childbirth, pathology, breast cancer, malaria, public health and poisonous spiders. Other
subjects include: the Olive View Sanatorium, the Los Angeles County Hospital, and the California Tuberculosis and Health Association.
There is an index of Emil Bogen's manuscripts that includes the title and a number (the original Bogen number was kept on
the folder and are in the container list below; the Huntington Library did not get all of the manuscripts on the list, so
the numbers in the container list are not necessarily consecutive - these items are marked on the index with "missing"). The
index can be found in Box 30.
The last five boxes of the collection contains material that was not on Emgil Bogen's numbered, manuscript index. This material
consists of personal information about Emil Bogen, correspondence by Bogen and his famly, his Naval records, awards and citations,
clippings, etc., as well as more of his manuscripts and research on medical topics.
At the end of the collection are three published books: Alcohol and man: the effects of alcohol on man in health and disease
edited by Haven Emerson (with Bogen's bookplate); Surgeon errant: the life and writings of William Henry Bucher, 1874-1934
edited by Emil Bogen; and What about alcohol? an illustrated outline of scientific facts about alcohol and alcohol drinking
by Emil Bogen and Lehmann W. S. Hisey (with handwritten notes and edits, a typed manuscript, and galley proofs).
Arrangement
The collection was kept in the original order in which the Huntington Library received it (roughly chronological).
