Scope and Contents

Chester Wing Barker earned his A.B. in English at Stanford University in May 1918. He was married to E. Catherine Crabtree, also of the Stanford class of 1918, and was later a realtor in Los Angeles. Based on their music store stamps, Barker purchased this music in and around Palo Alto for the most part, and many were probably used in local theatrical productions. This collection contains approximately 70 items dating from 1891-1973, the majority of which are from musicals. Condition varies but is generally poor. Almost all are inscribed by Barker with notes, pasted-in lyrics, and a few programs. Three items are inscribed by the composer: Thurlow Lieurance signed one to Mrs. Edward Robinson and Emmet Pendleton signed two for Barker himself. A listing created by the donor is available. Stanford Libraries hold two other collections from Barker: Chester W. Barker scrapbook, 1915-1933 (http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/5793114) and San Jose, CA : album of theater clippings, ca. 1910 (http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/5479465).
