Biography/Administrative History

Nellie E. Johns was born in California and attended classes at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco 1898-1899. The San Francisco School Board granted her a special freehand drawing, wood carving and clay modeling certificate of the high school grade in 1903, and after the earthquake and fire of 1906, she was teaching at Hamilton Evening School in San Francisco. In 1920 she was working as a wood carver. She died in San Francisco in 1952.

Scope and Content of Collection

Folder includes cloth-bound sketchbook, gold stamped on cover 'Miss Nellie Johns,' with 36 pages of pencil drawings, portraits and full figures, some including Chinese subjects. A few of the sketches have identifications or notations, and one is written in Chinese.
