Historical or Biographical Note
The Nancy and Roger Olmsted papers mainly consist of the collected papers of the family historical research and writing business,
Resource Consultants, from 1975 until 2007. Their son, Roger W. Olmsted, contributed to the business from 1992 until 1999.
Nancy Leigh Olmsted, nee Neely (1927- ), graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Sociology
in 1962. She then completed two years of post-graduate studies at Dominican College in San Rafael, California. While a student
at Dominican College she met and married Roger R. Olmsted, the first Curator of the San Francisco Maritime Museum. In 1975,
Nancy and Roger Olmsted established Resource Consultants as an historical research and writing business. Over the next 32
years, Resource Consultants operated as independent contractors producing historical reports, books, exhibits and research
articles for government and private organizations. Among their clients were the US Army Corps of Engineers, the US Department
of the Interior, California's Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the planning office of the city of San Francisco, the
California Historical Society and the San Francisco Port Authority. Nancy Olmsted was also the editor, designer and a group
leader for the travel
company Marin Adventures, and editor of the California Explorer newsletter from 1986 through 1990.
Roger Robertson Olmsted (1927-1981) was the first curator of the San Francisco Maritime Museum and was instrumental in the
restoration of the lumber schooner C.A. THAYER and the steam schooner WAPAMA. He was also editor of American West Magazine,
editor of the Sierra Club Bulletin from 1973 to 1975, and director of publications for the California Historical Society.
He was the curator of the History Department at the Oakland Museum from 1969 to 1972, and was the co-author with Tom Watkins
of "Here Today," a study of San Francisco's many historic buildings and architecture. His Master's thesis on the history of
Scow Schooners in San Francisco Bay was edited and published posthumously by his wife in 1989.
Roger Walcott Olmsted (1962-1999) entered the University of California at Berkeley at age 16 in 1978. Graduating Phi Beta
Kappa in 1983 with a double major in History and Anthropology, he was awarded a Mellon Fellowship and attended the UC Berkeley
School of Law. Taking his father's place at Resource Consultants in 1992, he worked with Nancy Olmsted to produce historical
and archaeological studies of San Francisco and Oakland for Caltrans. They also worked together on a 1993 report for the Sonoma
State Archaeological Studies Center that mapped out potential hazardous sites in the Mission Bay district of San Francisco,
and a 1994 historical assessment of floating dry dock facilities in Sausalito, California for the Housing and Urban Development
office of Marin County.
Collection Scope and Content
The Nancy and Roger Olmsted papers (SAFR 23820, HDC 1665) consist of 571 files in 34 boxes separated into 3 series. This collection
has been processed to the file unit level and is open for use without restrictions.
The Nancy and Roger Olmsted papers (SAFR 23820, HDC 1665), is comprised mainly of the research materials, collected photographs,
draft manuscripts and finished projects of Research Consultants. Research Consultants was a research and historical writing
business started in 1975 by the husband and wife team of Roger R. Olmsted (1928-1981) and Nancy L. Olmsted (born 1927), while
working as independent contractors studying the historical and cultural impact of a sewer line rebuild for San Francisco's
Waste Water Program (later renamed the Clean Water Program). Nancy Olmsted continued Resource Consultants alone after her
husband's death in 1981, until their son Roger W. Olmsted joined her as a writing partner in 1992. After Roger W.'s death
in 1999, she again ran the business alone.
From its founding through 2007, Resource Consultants produced thirty-three reports, books or exhibits on the history of San
Francisco and the San Francisco Bay Area. This collection documents the research and writing of those projects and also includes
correspondence, unfinished memoirs, poetry, historical essays and tour guide activities. The collection also includes more
than 1,800 individual photographs, pieces of artwork and maps organized by subject.
Collection Arrangement
A collection of 28 legal sized boxes, 7 rolls, 6 over sized boxes and 1 drawer, arranged in 3 series. Series 1 is the major
projects of Resource Consultants in chronological order. Series 2 consists of historical research, small projects, exhibitions,

Resource Consultants produced a 750 page report on the historical and cultural resources along the waterfront of San Francisco
from Channel Street to North Point for the Clean Water Program.
Under the guidelines for compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act furnished by the California State Water Resources
Control Board in their bulletin of February 10, 1976, the city of San Francisco was required to conduct a study of the potential
impact on historical and cultural resources within the area of the scheduled North Shore and Channel Outfalls Consolidation
Project of 1977. To accomplish this, the San Francisco Clean Water program contracted with Resource Consultants to produce
a 750 page historical survey of the area. The report used historical and archaeological research methodologies to identify
areas which may contain historical and cultural artifacts within the boundaries of the project.

Biography/Organization History
Resource Consultants wrote an exhibition plan for the Gold Rush era ship discovered in 1979 under Levi's Plaza at 1155 Battery
Street in San Francisco.
Roger and Nancy Olmsted were hired by the non-profit foundation, Friends of ALMA, to write an exhibit proposal in conjunction
with the architectural firm of Gordon Ashby Associates to display the buried Gold Rush ship discovered under Levi's Plaza
in 1979. The plan was to create an observation area with a glass floor in order to leave the ship, which was determined to
be either the PALMYRA or the WILLIAM GRAY, in situ. The Levi Strauss company financed archaeological excavations and commissioned
the plans for the exhibit, however the company abandoned the preservation plans and chose instead to leave the ship buried
beneath the plaza without the observation area.

Biography/Organization History
Resource Consultants conducted an investigation into the identity of the Gold Rush ship discovered by the San Francisco Clean
Water Program in 1981.
In 1981, the San Francisco Clean Water Program while repairing a sewer main near King Street in San Francisco, found the remains
of a buried Gold Rush ship and contracted with Resource Consultants to investigate its identity. Resource Consultants was
already working on a survey of the historical and cultural resources of this area for their Bayside San Francisco report (see
Subseries 1.12), and titled this investigation as a second volume to that much larger work. Despite the fact that this report
is labeled as Volume 2, it was created and published before Volume 1, due to its much smaller scale and size. The investigation
determined the ship to be the whaler LYDIA.

Resource Consultants was commissioned to write the history of the basalt paving stones re-used by the San Francisco Redevelopment
Agency in the Rincon Point-South Beach redevelopment project of 1981 to 1992.
The Rincon Point - South Beach Redevelopment Plan, adopted by the city of San Francisco in 1981, provided for the redevelopment
of the deteriorated industrial South Beach area into a new residential neighborhood, and authorized the installation and construction
of public improvements to include new sidewalks and public areas. As part of this renovation, basalt paving blocks were salvaged
and re-purposed as tree-wells and widened sidewalks and plaza areas. Eleven years later in 1992, as the project was winding
down, the agency commissioned Resource Consultants to document the origin of the basalt paving stones in order to preserve
the record of their use over time.

Resource Consultants contracted with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to write a hazardous material
assessment of the Tar Flat region of Mission Bay in San Francisco.
As a part of the continuing construction program on the repairs to the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge after the damage
of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans again contracted with Resource Consultants to write an historical and cultural
resources survey of the area around the approaches to the bridge in the Tar Flat region of Mission Bay in San Francisco. This
65 page study examined the commercial uses of the area through history, in order to determine potential hazardous materials
sites.

Marin County, California contracted with Resource Consultants in 1994 to write an historical and cultural resources survey
of four wooden drydock structures on the bottom of Richardson Bay.
In 1994 the County of Marin with funding from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, proposed demolishing
four wooden drydock structures which since 1966 had rested on the bottom of Richardson Bay, offshore from the Sausalito waterfront.
Preparatory to this demolition, Resource Consultants conducted an historic overview and a National Register of Historic Places
significance evaluation as a part of the environmental review process. Their evaluation resulted in a 21 page report presented
to the demolition company, WESCO, to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and to the Planning Office
of Marin County, California.

Biography/Organization History
Resource Consultants contracted with the San Francisco Energy Company in 1995 to write an historical and cultural resources
survey of the Islais Creek Seawall Lot #344 & India Basin in San Francisco.
In 1994, the San Francisco Energy Company proposed rebuilding the co-generation energy facility at Islais Creek Seawall Lot
#344. As part of the state and federal certification process, they were required to provide to the federal Environmental Protection
Agency and to the State of California's Office of Planning and Research both an archaeological and an historical survey of
the affected cultural resources. In order to comply with these regulations, the San Francisco Energy Company contracted with
Resource Consultants to write a 78 page historical cultural resources survey. The proposed construction project did not occur
as planned due to concerns over pollution and local community activism including protests. The original plant was demolished
and the site returned to federally protected tidal wetlands in 2008.

Scope and Content Note
This subseries consists of preliminary research on the Ferry Building, contract and editorial correspondence, invoices, receipts,
photographs, and galley proofs of final edit of the book.
Biography/Organization History
Nancy Olmsted wrote a centennial history book of San Francisco's iconic Ferry Building in 1998.
In commemoration of the approaching centennial of the city's Ferry Building in 1998, the San Francisco Port Authority commissioned
Nancy Olmsted to write a pictorial history book of the building and its role in the city's history. The San Francisco Port
Authority also commissioned Heyday Books in Berkeley, California to handle production, printing and distribution of the book.
This three cornered deal had consequences for Olmsted who had serious disagreements with the publisher over royalties and
editorial control of the book.
Arrangement
This subseries is arranged sequentially into 33 files from preliminary research on the Ferry Building, through contract paperwork
and royalty agreements, correspondence with the publisher and printer, photographs in chapter order, to galley proofs of the

Biography/Organization History
In 2007 Nancy Olmsted working with artist Michael Manwaring and the San Francisco Arts Commission unsuccessfully proposed
to design 8 pylon exhibits for the Third Street Light Rail Muni extension.
The Muni / Metro Third Street Light Rail project expanded the muni metro system from Fourth and King Streets to the Caltrain
Bayshore Station in San Francisco and was completed in 2007. The San Francisco Arts Commission solicited bids for platform
exhibits and Nancy Olmsted , working with local artist Michael Manwaring, presented 8 proposals for historic pylons based
on the similar exhibits she and Manwaring had completed for the embarcadero walkway. The San Francisco Arts Commission however,
decided to display art works instead of historical displays and rejected Olmsted's proposals.
