Abstract: David Valentine operated several printing companies in the Upper Market, Castro, and Mission districts of San Francisco from
the mid-1960s until late in 1998. He was the principal printer for many gay and lesbian organizations, businesses, and individuals
throughout that time, and the job files and samples of work he printed in this collection provide a rich source of ephemera
from this period.

Scope and Content of Collection
David Valentine operated several printing companies in the Upper Market, Castro, and Mission districts of San Francisco from
the mid-1960s until late in 1998. He was the principle printer for many gay and lesbian organizations, businesses, and individuals
throughout that time, and the job files and samples of work he printed in this collection provide a rich source of ephemera
from this period. The bulk of the collection contains Valentine’s chronological job files from 1989 to 1998 and ephemera he
printed from the 1971 to 1998. There are ads, brochures, business cards, buttons, calendars, catalogs, certificates, directories,
flyers, greeting cards, invitations, matchbooks, menus, newsletters, patches, posters, programs, resumes, stamps, stationery,
stickers, transparencies and some artifacts, original artwork and photographs. Businesses and organizations represented in
the collection include leather bars and motorcycle clubs, the Golden Gate Business Association, the Elephant Walk restaurant,
the Gay and Community Softball Leagues,the Trocadero, the Imperial Court and Act Up. The collection also includes financial
records and a small amount of correspondence from Valentine’s enterprises, including Crown Associates, the business Valentine
ran from approximately 1965 to 1972. According to a flyer in the collection, David Valentine Graphic Services on Castro Street
closed on May 24, 1978 after 10 years, and David’s Print Shop opened on 714 Valencia on May 30, 1978. See also David Valentine
