In 1989 the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) declassified several collections at The Bancroft Library,
including the papers of UC faculty members in the departments of Physics, Engineering, Chemistry, and Mathematics. In the
case of Melvin Calvin, NARA returned primarily photocopies to the Library.
Biography/Administrative History
Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and Director of the bio-organic chemistry group at the Lawrence
Radiation National Laboratory. Professor Calvin received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961 for identifying the path of
carbon in photosynthesis.
