    Biographical / Historical

    Viacheslav Vsevolodovich Ivanov (21 August 1929 – 7 October 2017) was a prominent Soviet/Russian philologist, linguist and literary scholar; editor, Elemena, semiotician and Indo-Europeanist, best known for his glottalic theory of Indo-European consonantism and for placing the Indo-European urheimat in the area of the Armenian Highlands and Lake Urmia.

    Scope and Contents

    The collection contains writings, correspondence, reports, minutes, curricular material, notes, and printed matter, relating to the teaching of linguistics, to the Russian language and literature, and Russian culture.
    Incremental Materials Acquired in 2021, the increment to the papers in the Hoover Institution Library & Archives (boxes 23-185) substantially increases the volume of the collection. The incremental materials span the lifetime of Ivanov ranging from his numerous books, articles, and speeches to Ivanov's distinguished academic career as a scientist and the Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures and the Program of Indo-European Studies at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and other universities. The increment consists of Ivanov's personal records, academic career file, subject file, correspondence, speeches and writings, photographs and audiovisual material.
    The Personal Records of Ivanov contain biographical notes, early childhood papers, educational and naturalization records, family file, as well as an extensive amount of Ivanov's diaries and notebooks. The Academic papers contain lectures given by Ivanov in his capacity as a professor of linguistics and include research materials and conference proceedings.
    The Subject File contains materials collected by Ivanov or retained from his academic career on various subjects, some potentially for use in the production of the books he sought to write. Of particular significance are the documents relating to Russian literature and culture.
    There is a substantial Correspondence series in the increment, including exchanges of letters between Ivanov and his family, friends, colleagues, and public figures.
    The extensive Speeches and Writings series includes numerous books, articles, interviews, and speeches, as well as drafts, notes, research material, and various book reviews.
    The Photographs depict Ivanov, his family, and associates, as well as his participation in special ceremonies and events; photographs of Boris Pasternak, Joseph Brodsky and other public figures.
    Audiovisual Materials include interviews and documentary recordings of various events.

    The Incremental Materials are organized into eight series: Personal Records, Academic Career File, Correspondence, Subject File, Speeches and Writings, Writings by Others, Photographs, and Audiovisual Materials.
