    Acquisition Information

    The Lawrence Fixel papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Lawrence Fixel on June 18, 1993. Additions were made on July 24, 1993, June 20, 1994, December 19, 1994, March 9, 1996, July 18, 1996, October 12, 1998, and July 26, 2004.

    Chronology

    January 17, 1917 Born, Brooklyn, NY.
    1933 Graduates from White Plains High School, White Plains, NY.
      Begins writing first poems.
    1935 Moves to New York City.
    1936 Hired by the Federal Writers' Project (WPA).
      Made literary editor of SFZ, a magazine devoted to the arts (later became the American Arts Monthly).
    1939 Departs New York City and hitch-hikes through the South arriving in Los Angeles in 1941.
    1942 Joins the Merchant Marines.
    1944 Marries Alexa [maiden surname unknown]. A year later, Kate his daughter is born. Divorces Alexa in 1948.
    1952 Two poems published in the California Quarterly.
      Moves to San Francisco and meets Justine Jones.
    1953 Marries Justine.
    1956 - 1957 Lives in Valle de Bravo, Mexico with Justine.
    1958 Begins work on the novel, Journey for a Witness.
    1961 - 1963 Justine Fixel receives a Fulbright Lectureship in Social Welfare in Rome. This lectureship is renewed in 1962 and 1963.
      Finishes Journey for a Witness while in Rome in 1963. The novel is to remain unpublished.
    1964 Returns to the U.S., settling for good in San Francisco.
      Over the next several years begins publishing poems and parables with increasing frequency.
      Begins teaching at the University of California, San Francisco.
    1967 A book of poems is accepted for publication by Unicorn Press, Santa Barbara, Calif., but the contract is reneged due to financial difficulties.
    1970 A collection of parables, The Scale of Silence is published by Kayak Press, Santa Cruz, Calif.
    1972 Time To Destroy/To Discover, a long poem on Picasso and the creative process is published by Panjandrum Press, Berkeley, Calif.
    1975 Through Deserts of Snow, a novella is published by Capra Press, Santa Barbara, Calif. as part of a chapbook series. This novella was nominated by author, Raymond Carver for the Pushcart Prize.
    1976 The Edge of Something, a collection of fiction and parables by Cloud Marauder Press, Berkeley, Calif.
    1979 The Book of Glimmers, a collection of short reflections and aphorisms is co-published by Cloud Marauder and Manard Press, London.
    1991 Truth, War and the Dream-Game, a collection of prose poems and parables is published by Coffee House Press, Minneapolis , MN.
    2001 Is listed in The Academy of American Poets roster of members and donors.
    August 24, 2003 Dies at home in San Francisco of natural causes.
