The records were donated by the Renaissance Society in August 1997 and February 2012.
Biography/Administrative History
The Renaissance Society was established in 1986 under the auspices of the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) Department
of Regional and Continuing Education. It is a program for retired persons 50 years of age and older who are interested in
continuing to learn on a college campus. No prerequisite or education level is required for participation. A small annual
membership fee covers basic operating costs.
The Society is affiliated with the Association of Learning in Retirement Organizations West (ALIROW) which is part of the
Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN). In 2002 when the Renaissance Society joined ALIROW it was among 31 new retirement programs
affiliated with EIN in the United States and Canada.
The Society’s programs are generally held on the CSUS campus on Friday’s while school is in session. The program begins with
a luncheon meeting they call “The Cracker Barrel” in the campus cafeteria. Topics of interest are discussed under the leadership
of a coordinator. Following this meeting are several concurrent seminars held in campus classrooms. Topics and discussion
leaders are selected prior to each semester. At the end of the afternoon the entire group meets together to listen to a speaker
present a forum topic.
In addition to campus events are opportunities to attend sight-seeing and educational excursions within Northern California.
Members may also attend Society-organized creative activities such as art and music performances.

The collection consists of eleven series: Historical Files, Administrative Files, Minutes of Meetings, Newsletters, Programs,
Membership, Publicity Material, Miscellaneous, Photographs, Scrapbooks, and CSUS Fiftieth Anniversary Exhibit Material.
