The Hanscom photograph collection, circa 1880-1910, bulk 1889-1895, (SAFR 19542, P79-064a) is mainly comprised of photographs of Union Iron Works, San Francisco, California, showing shipyard activities, vessels, and stationary engines. Background
W.W. Hanscom (1869-1956) was a draftsman and electrical engineer, who was employed by Union Iron Works for over 20 years. He was the son of W.W. Hanscom (born 1840), who was one of the leading mechanical engineers of California in the late 19th century and a pioneer in early steam engine development.
