Historical Background

The community of Atlanta, California, sits on French Camp Road, in Denton Township, San Joaquin County. Inspiration for the naming of Atlanta, founded shortly after the Civil War, supposedly came from the popular song "Marching Through Georgia," which commemorated U.S. general William Tecumseh Sherman's march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia. Atlanta, California, served as a station for stages in the 1860s and 1870s, and by 1879 had a blacksmith, wagon shop, seven houses, and one store, the latter of which no longer exists.

Scope and Content

The Atlanta General Store ledger lists customers and transactions in the business between October 1891 and September 1894.
