    Scope and Content of Collection

David Clark Barnard (1937-2014) was a dancer, choreographer, painter, wardrobe dresser and costume designer. He kept journals “in words and drawings” that document nearly 50 years of his personal, professional and artistic life. Barnard was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved to San Francisco in 1964. In 1965, he joined the San Francisco Ballet as a dancer and costume designer. In 1966, he joined the wardrobe department of the San Francisco Opera, Barnard’s entries refer to his work for the ballet and opera; his health, relationships, world travels and performances he attended; his dreams, memories and everyday routine. The journals include poetry, lists, contact information, appointments and quotes. There are colored illustrations in a variety of media and pencil and pen and ink drawings. Barnard’s drawings include landscapes, nudes, portraits –ranging from strangers he observed to friends who died of AIDS-- costumes and sets. Barnard wrote his last entry just a few days before he died. He inserted photographs, ephemera, news clippings and a small amount of correspondence into the journals; these have been left intact. There are no journals from 1991. Journals are arranged in chronological order; one contains oversize diaries from various years.
