Biographical Information

Paul Leland Kirk (1902-1970) was a professor of Criminalistics at the University of California, Berkeley. Kirk earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California in 1927 and spent his entire career at Berkeley, with the exception of a leave of service during World War II when he worked on the Manhattan Project. Kirk established the first academic program in criminalistics in the United States at U.C. Berkeley. In addition to advocating for the discipline of criminalistics, advising several schools in the development of their own departments, Kirk was a frequent consultant for both prosecution and defense cases.

Scope and Content of Collection

The Paul L. Kirk papers consist of the research, writings and correspondence of Professor Kirk. Included are materials regarding the establishment of the School of Criminology at U.C. Berkeley, records pertaining to the California Association of Criminalists as well as Kirk's own research files and notes. The collection has been divided into eight series: California Association of Criminalists; Conferences/ Organizations; Research; Writings; Writings by Others; Correspondence; Professional; and Personal.
