Scope and Content of Collection

The materials in this collection were created for newspaper publications from 1965-1983. The bulk of the collection are hand-drawn, original newspaper comics by Max Von Bibber, artist for “Winnie Winkle”, an American comic strip which appeared over a 76-year span (1920–96). Created by Martin Branner, who wrote the strip for over 40 years, Von Bibber took over in 1962 until 1980. Other notable artists include Bert Whitman, who was a member of the American Cartoonists Society and was recognized by a variety of organizations. He was a three time winner of the American Cancer Society Award in 1953, 1954, and 1956 and received the Disabled American Veterans Citation in 1958. Whitman won ten straight Freedom Foundation Awards and honored with their Distinguished Service Award. Also included is Bil Keane, famous for “The Family Circus” cartoon written, inked, and colored by his son, Jeff Keane. The strip generally uses a single captioned panel with a round border. The series debuted on February 29, 1960, and has been in continuous production ever since. According to publisher King Features Syndicate, it is the most widely syndicated cartoon panel in the world, appearing in 1,500 newspapers. Accompanying cartoonists included in this collection are Draper Hill, Gerard P Donelan, Edmund S Valtman, Klaas Vanderspoel, John Shevchik, Clyde Wells, Frank Johnson, and Norman Chaput. Original newspaper publications for these comics include The Hartford Times, The Beaver Falls
