BELUGA (steamer-bark, whaler) logbook (SAFR 14266, HDC 56) is comprised of a one volume, 62 page logbook kept by W.H. Watston from February 1 to November 4, 1888. The logbook records a whaling trip from San Francisco to the Arctic Ocean and return. The master of the vessel was Captain J.E. Brooks. This collection has been processed and is open for use without restriction.
The 62 pages of short daily entries are written in clear writing and include annotations in the margins. Entries mostly mention wind speed and direction, barometer reading, temperature, longitude and latitude. Many entries mention ice, whales, and other vessels. An April 6 entry describes an incident when boatswain Thomas Fisher was put in irons for disobeying the order not to go on board another vessel. Master of the vessel Captain J.E. Brooks was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts and died on another voyage between San Francisco and Hawaii.
