Abstract: Larry Williams was a producer of medical documentaries and TV programs, including the first live televised open-heart surgery. The collection consists of scripts, production materials, and photographs related to Williams' career writing and producing medical and health-related television productions.

Biography

Lawrence (Larry) A. Williams was a native of Ottawa, Ill. and a student at the University of Arizona. He moved to San Francisco in 1944 where he wrote radio scripts for First Nighter, Skippy Hollywood Theater, and Dink Templeton. During this time, Williams also worked for Drury Co. advertising agency. In 1950, he became a writer-producer for the award winning series, Science in Action, produced by the California Academy of Sciences and wrote and produced Dr. Harvey Whites first television appearances. His additional credits include, A Life in Your Hands (Oct. 1953-Mar. 1954), The Wall Outside (1955), House Call (1956-58), Doctors News Conference (1956), Medicine of the 1960s and Vital Signs. His programs won awards from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the American Cancer Society and the American and California heart associations. In 1959, Williams, along with his wife, Mary, incorporated Lawren Productions. Williams, who had a lifelong battle with osteomyelitis, died in May 1996.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of materials related to the career of Larry Williams. Included are scripts, production materials, and photographs for television programs centered around medical and health issues. Programs written by Larry Williams and produced by Lawren Productions, Inc. Programs represented include Doctors at Work, House Calls, Medicine of the 60s, A Life in Your Hands, Lifespan, Your Child and the Expert, and Science in Action. Also includes a crime and crime prevention program, The Wall Outside. Programs were aired on KRON-TV, KPIX-TV, and KTVU-TV.
