Biography
Leonard Stanley is an American interior designer who has lived in Los Angeles since 1951. He began
collecting costume design drawings in the early 1970s.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
The Leonard Stanley collection spans the years 1926-1994 (bulk 1939-1974) and encompasses more than 700 costume design drawings
and 1 scrapbook. The collection documents the work of many of Hollywood’s most prominent costume designers including Adrian,
Ray Aghayan, Donald Brooks, Donfeld, Edith Head, Irene, Orry Kelly, Jean Louis, Walter Plunkett, Helen Rose, Irene Sharaff,
William Travilla, and John Truscott. Some of the contemporary designers represented include Bob Mackie, Anthea Sylbert, and
Theadora Van Runkle. Many of the drawings include fabric swatches, notes related to the production of the costumes, and approvals
from producers and directors. The collection also contains a number of unidentified drawings by Travis Banton, Howard Greer,
Irene, and Edward Stevenson.
