Biographical Note

One of the world's most eminent authorities on Sephardic studies, Moshe Lazar began his life in Rumania in 1928, though his family moved to Antwerp, Belgium when he was still an infant. In 1940, the Lazar family was forced to flee to France when Nazi planes bombed Antwerp. The family was placed in a transit camp for three years as they awaited deportation to Auschwitz, but was finally able to escape with the help of the French Underground. Young Lazar was placed in a Catholic school where he memorized English and mathematics textbooks.
A few years later, Lazar was studying comparative literature at the Sorbonne and, while in Paris, shared an apartment with Holocaust survivor and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel. Another notable acquaintance of Lazar was Marcel Marceau, from whom he took pantomime lessons.
From Paris, Lazar's travels took him to Israel in 1948 where he fought in the War of Independence as well as two subsequent Israeli wars in Sinai. In 1951, Lazar received his M.A. in French literature, romance philology, and history from Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Later while at the University of Salamanca in Spain, he became interested in Ladino, the language of Spanish Jews, and became a world authority in the subject as he saved and translated hundreds of manuscripts including a Jewish prayer book for women from the late 1400s.
A doctoral thesis on the literature of courtly love earned Lazar his Ph.D. from the Sorbonne in Paris. He then went on to become the first Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Tel Aviv. Another achievement around the same time was becoming one of the founders of Israeli television in the 1960s.
By the late 1970s, Dr. Lazar had arrived in the United States, founding the comparative literature program at the University of Southern California. In addition to comparative literature, Lazar taught French, Italian, Spanish, Medieval drama, Medieval Jewish culture in Spain, and subjects pertaining to the post-expulsion Sephardic diaspora.
One of Lazar's most noteworthy achievements began in the early 1980s when he learned that the ancient Jewish quarter in the city of Girona (near Barcelona) was in danger of being replaced by a shopping center. The area--referred to as The Call--was considered the birthplace of the Jewish Kabala and had been buried since the Spanish Inquisition and only recently become uncovered. Moshe Lazar rallied support to rescue the area and formed a corporation called American Friends of Girona's Call. For his efforts, he was awarded the Orden del Mérito Civil by the consul general of Spain in 1993.
For his years of teaching, research, and service to USC, Lazar received the Raubenheimer Outstanding Senior Faculty Award in 2003. An exhibit at USC in 2005 was founded on much of Lazar's Sephardim research: "The First Renaissance of Europe: Sefared, Al-Andalus, España. Three Cultures in Contact."
Moshe Lazar's last big project was a major study of 1800 years of anti-Semitic propaganda imagery, writings, sermons, and films called "Satan's Synagogue." He retired from USC in 2011 and passed away in 2012 after battling Alzheimer's for several years. He is survived by wife Sonia and daughter, Ilanit.

Scope and Content

The 52 boxes of Moshe Lazar's papers cover approximately forty years of Lazar's research studies and academic career. Most of the material in the collection is topic-related rather than function-related; i.e. there are numerous articles and notes on literature, religion, etc., but very little correspondence or other personal papers. Almost all of the material was generated after Lazar's immigration to the United States from Israel in the 1970s.

Contemporary French Theatre

Scope and Content

The bulk of this series is comprised of materials by and about Eugène Ionesco, the Romanian playwright who wrote mostly in French, and one of the foremost figures of the French Avant-garde theatre. A personal friend of Moshe Lazar, Ionesco was interviewed by him; the transcripts are part of this series. An article by Moshe Lazar called "The Psychodramatic Stage: Ionesco and His Doubles" is included in several drafts as well as the final publication. Several of the folders contain copies of works by Ionesco such as "The Bald Soprano" and "La Cantatrice Chauve." In addition to the materials on Ionesco, there are a few other notable playwrights represented including Michel de Ghelderode who was a Belgian dramatist writing in French, and a play by Molière. (Though he lived in the 17th century, Molière is considered the creator of modern French comedy.)

Medieval Drama and Literature

Scope and Content

One of Moshe Lazar's fields of specialization included medieval drama and literature, including psychological and religious themes. L'Advocacie Nostre Dame is a 14th-century French medieval poem that tells the story of an imagined lawsuit between the Virgin Mary and the Devil who is trying to reclaim human souls for Hell. Several folders in this series concern this particular work, including copies of the work itself. All of it is in French. Other files in this series are copies of articles or parts of books on medieval literature, as well as Lazar's own notes and manuscript fragments. Medieval authors represented include Geoffrey Chaucer, Giovanni Fiorentino, Rutebeuf, Giovanni Boccaccio, and Eustache Marcadé.

Provençal Literature

Scope and Content

Provençal literature consists of the body of writings in the Occitan, or Provençal, language of Provence and neighboring regions in southeastern France. It was most representative in the lyric love poetry between the 11th and 14th centuries, that of the troubadours. Though most of the materials in this series contain examples of Provençal poetry and Hebrew- Provençal literature, there are also some studies and critiques of the period including a study of the Provençal drama "Le Jugement Dernier (Lo Jutgamen General)." Related materials in this collection are listed under "Special Subjects" in the sub-series "Courtly Love." Most of the materials in this series are in French.

Sephardic Studies

Scope and Content

Sephardic studies refers specifically to the Jewish community which originated on the Iberian Peninsula at the start of the second millennium. More broadly, Sephardim includes the traditionally Eastern Jewish communities of West Asia and beyond who, although not having genealogical roots in the Jewish communities of Iberia, have adopted a Sephardic style of liturgy and Sephardic law and customs imparted to them by the Iberian Jewish exiles over the course of the last few centuries. The original community of Iberian Jews was decimated in the 15th century when the Catholic Monarchs in Spain issued an edict that decreed that Jews either 1) convert to Catholicism to remain in Spain, 2) remain Jews but be expelled by a certain deadline, or 3) be subjected to death without trial for any Jew who did not convert or leave by the deadline. The series is divided loosely into four subseries, though there is much overlap between them as well as overlap into other series. Much of the Sephardic Studies series relates to four particular topics: Haggadah (the order of the Passover Seder), Ladino literature, the Spanish Inquisition, and general ephemera. (Ladino was a Romance language derived from Old Spanish, incorporating elements from all the old Romance languages of the Iberian peninsula, Hebrew, Aramaic, and in the lands receiving those who were exiled: Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Greek, Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian vocabulary.) As with most of Lazar's papers, the files in this series contain notes, articles, treatises, and literary works in several languages—notably English, French, Spanish, and Hebrew.

Spanish/ Judeo-Spanish Biblical Texts

Scope and Content

One of Moshe Lazar's long-time projects was the publishing of critical editions of Spanish and Judeo-Spanish biblical texts, among them The Ladino Pentateuch (1547), La Biblia Ladinada (15th cent.), and La Biblia Alba (The Alba Bible). The original Alba Bible originated in 1422 when a high-ranking Spanish Churchman, Don Luis de Guzmán of Maqueda, persuaded the renowned scholar, Rabbi Moses Arragel de Guadalajara, to translate the Hebrew Bible into Castilian accompanied by an extensive commentary and a wealth of illustrations and illuminations. Guzmán's intent was to improve Jewish-Christian relations, but Arragel had misgivings about preparing a text that might conflict with Christian doctrine and expose Spanish Jewry to attack. Though he did finally relent and prepare the translation with commentary, the Jewish religion prohibited illuminated manuscripts and so a team of Christian illuminators was commissioned to illustrate the text. The Bible was completed in 1430; however, Guzmán's original misgivings translated into reality. Relations between Jews and Christians worsened and culminated with the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Guzmán's Castilian Bible disappeared for almost two hundred years until it was discovered in the Library of the Liria Palace, seat of the Grand Duke of Alba and Berwick, from which it gets its name. This series of 21 folders contains articles and notes regarding the history of the Alba Bible as well as other Spanish/Judeo biblical texts. Several works are the writings of Lazar including articles in English and Spanish on Rabbi Moses Arragel, whom Lazar refers to as a "servant of two masters."

Special Subjects

Scope and Content

Many of Moshe Lazar's areas of interest and expertise are grouped together in the series "Special Subjects," although there is considerable overlap with the other eighteen series. The seven boxes which comprise this series cover many topics including Samuel Beckett, Hieronymus Bosch, Marc Chagall, Courtly Love, Heaven and Hell, Italian Jewry, Jewish History, Arnold Schoenberg, and many other subjects. One particular subject of note is referred to simply as "Girona" from Lazar's own files. The medieval town of Girona had a small Jewish quarter called The Call (from the Hebrew "Cahal," meaning "center.") It was the area restricted to scholars and known as the birthplace of the Jewish Kabbalah. This neighborhood had been literally buried since the Spanish Inquisition and the land was to be developed as a shopping center when the story came to Lazar's attention in the 1980s. Lazar spearheaded a major acquisition and restoration project which resulted in rescuing the excavated community and preserving the oldest Jewish city in Europe. For his efforts, Lazar was awarded the insignia of the Orden del Mérito Civil by the consul general of Spain. The group of folders pertaining to the Girona project contain newspaper clippings, construction documents, correspondence related to the Friends of Girona Museum and Institute, a calendar and other ephemera showing photographs of the restored town, etc.

Photographs and Slides

Scope and Content

The two boxes which comprise this series consist primarily of slides and a few photographs and negatives of topics related to Lazar's lectures and presentations. Whenever possible, folder titles were copied from Lazar's photo envelopes and slide boxes. Subjects represented in the slides include the art of Marc Chagall and Hieronymus Bosch; modern art in general; travel images of Mexico, Israel, Spain, etc.; and several folders of "miscellaneous" or unidentified slides. The photographs and slides are arranged alphabetically by subject. A third "mixed series" box contains photographs of a neighborhood of Girona which was discovered and preserved in the 1980s and 90s.
