Biographical Note
George Aubrey Zentmyer was born in North Platte, Nebraska on August 9, 1913. He earned a bachelor's degree in botany from
the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by a master's and doctoral degree in plant pathology from the University
of California, Berkeley. In 1944 he moved to Riverside to work at the Citrus Experiment Station, and later became one of the
first faculty members at the University of California, Riverside.
Zentmyer became an authority on phytophthora, which are soil-borne fungi that caused infestations of root rot in avocado groves
and other crops. His research on those plant pathogens was credited with saving the avocado industry, and also benefitted
other subtropical and tropical crops worldwide. Zentmyer was elected to the National Academy of Science in 1979, and also
served for a term as the president of the American Phytopathological Society in 1966.
