Goodman while working as the art director for Paramount Pictures and Universal film studios on the set of the movies "Souls
at Sea," 1937, "Ruler of the Seas,"1939 and "Crash Dive," 1943.

Historical or Biographical Note
John Bartlett Goodman III (1901 August 15 - 1991 June 30) was a talented pencil artist, an Academy Award winning art director
and an amateur historian.
Mr. Goodman worked for Paramount Studios from 1932 to 1939 and Universal Studios from 1940 to 1946, winning the 1943 Academy
Award for Art Direction for his work on the film version of "Phantom of the Opera." He was also nominated three other times
between 1938 and 1944 in the category of art direction, and in his spare time wrote an exhaustive eleven volume encyclopedia
of Gold Rush ships. (See SAFR 23820, HDC 1651). His Gold Rush ship work, twenty one years in preparation and supported by
eight volumes of addenda, extends to some 5,000 manuscript pages comprised of individual histories of 762 ships in alphabetical
order, recording a broad spectrum of information about the vessels and their crews.
The John B. Goodman papers (SAFR 18786, HDC 133) consists of four files of notes, correspondence and drawings created by John
Goodman while working as the art director for Paramount Pictures and Universal film studios on the set of the movies "Souls
at Sea," 1937, "Ruler of the Seas,"1939 and "Crash Dive," 1943.
This collection includes movie set blueprints for submarine interiors and exterior shots, and plans for a model of a clipper
ship used in filming special effects on the set of "Souls at Sea" and is arranged in four files as follows: File 1 contains
notes on ships, shipbuilding and engineeering specifications, file also contains correspondence between Mr. Goodman and Paramount
Pictures executives on cost estimates, and with the Alaska Packers company on ship design details, dated between 1936 and
1939. File 2 contains detailed drawings of ship and submarine interiors, dated 1926 and 1927. File 3 contains separation sheets
for 21 blueprints contained on 4 rolls and in a drawer, dated between 1932 and 1942. File 4 is a separate accession of drawings
of ship interiors from the CITY OF LOS ANGELES dated January 1927.
