Biographical / Historical
Russel Squire was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 21, 1908. His parents were William John Squire and Jean Crookstone
Muirhead.
Russel Squire graduated from Oberlin College with a BSM in 1929 and from Western Reserve University with an M.A. in Music
in 1939. He was Director of Instrumental Music Instruction for the Chillicothe (Ohio) Public Schools from 1929 to 1937. He
married Doris Winifred Orr on August 5, 1931, and they had two sons – Ronald Nelson (born July 5, 1932) and William Cassius
(born August 9, 1934).
Russel did graduate work toward a doctorate at New York University in the five summers from 1937 to 1941. He lived in Greenwich
Village while his wife and sons lived in Ohio. Russel graduated with a PhD in Philosophy of Education from New York University
in 1942. Upon his graduation, he received a telegram of congratulations from the Administration of George Pepperdine College
(Hugh Tiner and E. V. Pullias). The telegram is in the Russel Squire Papers.
Dr. Squire was Professor of Music and Chairman of the Arts Department at Pepperdine College from 1937 to 1956. He was Professor
of Music at California State College, Long Beach (CSCLB) from 1956 to 1964, and he was Chairman of the Department of Music
at CSCLB from 1964 to 1972. He was Professor of Philosophy for the Pepperdine School of Education which was located on the
original Pepperdine campus in Los Angeles from 1972 to 1978.
Dr. Squire's sons, Ron and Bill Squire were both students at Pepperdine and they played together on the baseball team in the
school year of 1952-53. Ron left Pepperdine for the military in 1950. Ron returned to Pepperdine in 1952 and graduated. He
married and had a family and was employed by the Philadelphia Phillies baseball club and Mt. San Antonio College. His family
were members of the Whittier Church of Christ. Ron suffered from ALS and died at the age of 43 (1976).
Bill entered Pepperdine in 1952, then entered the military in 1952-53. Bill returned from the military and enrolled at Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo. He married and had a family and moved to the Thousand Oaks area around 1965. Bill was an architect
and he designed the church building for the Conejo Valley Church of Christ in Thousand Oaks. The building was completed in
1977.
When Russel and Doris moved from Pepperdine to CSCLB in 1956, they lived first in Los Alamitos. Then their son, Bill, designed
a home for them at 2431 Sparta Drive in San Pedro and they lived there until they retired from Long Beach in 1972 and moved
to the Westlake Village area near Thousand Oaks.
Russel Squire served as an elder with the Vermont Avenue Church of Christ in Los Angeles from 1945 to 1956, and he was an
elder with the Conejo Valley Church of Christ in Thousand Oaks from the mid 1970s to at least 1984. After Doris died in c1977,
he married Evelyn Eisnaugle on August 11, 1980. Russel and Evelyn moved to Palm Springs around the mid 1980s and lived there
for seven years. They were members of the Palm Springs Church of Christ. At some point in the early 1990s, they moved to Waverly,
Ohio to be near Evelyn's daughter. Russel Squire died on November 17, 1997 in Waverly, Ohio. Evelyn outlived him by 4 years.
Russel is buried beside Doris in Pierce Brothers Cemetery in Thousand Oaks.
Dr. Russel Squire was the author of five books and published many articles in professional and scholarly journals. Russel
and Doris Squire loved to travel, and they organized several tours under the name of Educational Travel Service. Russel was
a Tour Director to Europe and Britain, 1957-1962, and possibly longer.
There are several photos of Russel Squire in his papers.
He had two children, eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
