Biography

Father Harold F. Ryan, S.J., was born in Sunnyside, Utah, in 1908 and died in 1979. He served as a professor of English at Loyola University (which later became Loyola Marymount University) in Los Angeles, California. He was instrumental in the development of the Department of English at then Loyola University and later served as Dean of the Graduate School (1954).

Collection Description

This colleciton consist of biographical information on, and personal letters, of, important Roman Catholic authors that Reverend Harold F. Ryan, S.J., collected in hopes of establishing a gallery at Loyola University of their letters, biographies, photographs, and memorabilia. This reflected his interests in Roman Catholic authors as a professor of English at Loyola University and then Loyola Marymount University.
Names of note in this collection include Jacques Maritain, Evelyn Waugh, and Hilaire Belloc.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into nineteen folders, arranged alphabetically by the names of the Catholic authors. The only exception is the first folder (containing information about Reverend Ryan).
