Abstract: Dr. Hendrik S. Houthakker served two years as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers or CEA. These files cover the years of 1969-1971 and include his activities as a senior staff economist on the international task forces; he was chairman of several subcommittees and working groups that dealt with such issues as antitrust policy; the pricing and selling of copper; increases in prices of lumber and plywood; housing construction prices; Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) policy; agricultural trade; oil import control system; economic policy; transportation; and steel prices and cost factors in the U. S. steel industry.

Scope and Content of Collection

Dr. Hendrik S. Houthakker served two years as a member of the CEA, from 1969 to 1971. These files cover the years 1967 to 1971 and include his activities as a senior staff economist on the CEA (1967-1968). Dr. Houthakker served on a number of interagency and international task forces, and was chairman of several subcommittees and working groups that dealt with such issues as antitrust policy; the pricing and selling of copper; increases in prices of lumber and plywood; housing construction prices; OECD economic policy; agricultural trade; oil import control system; economic policy; transportation; and steel prices and cost factors in the U.S. steel industry. The Hendrik S. Houthakker files series is comprised of the Administrative Files subseries, the Meetings subseries, the Speeches subseries, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Policy; Subcommittee on Copper Files, the Cabinet Committee on Economy Policy; Task Force on Softwood Lumber and Plywood Files subseries; the United States (U.S.) Department of the Interior; Energy Action Program Files subseries; the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Economic Policy Committee; Working Party Files subseries; the Agriculture Programs Files subseries; the Subject Files subseries; and the Discussion Study Papers subseries. The Speeches subseries contains memoranda, statements, and correspondence pertaining to topics such as natural and mineral resources; Federal Government expenditures; international trade; and exchange rates. The Meetings subseries includes correspondence, memoranda, statements, press releases, and printed materials related to inflation; imports; international trade; and U.S. trade policy. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Policy; Subcommittee on Copper Files subseries contains correspondence, drafts, memoranda, reports, papers, cables, publications, and news clippings related to copper supply and demand; possible antitrust activities in the copper industry; marketing conditions and pricing procedures and policies; world copper consumption and supply; allocation of copper to domestic consumers; the London Metal Exchange; mineral resources policy; and the wire and cable industry. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Policy; Task Force on Softwood Lumber and Plywood Files subseries contains material related to softwood lumber legislation; national forests; supply-demand outlook; futures trading in plywood; timber sales delays; rail car shortages; the proposed Bureau of Land Management allowance cut plan for Western Oregon; and Canadian softwood/plywood exports. The U.S. Department of the Interior; Energy Action Program Files subseries contains correspondence, charts/graphs, reports, and printed materials on topics such as oil tanker rates; the U.S. energy situation; Interior Department proposals; coal resources; and natural gas production.
