Series Scope and Contents

This series consists of files documenting Brown's congressional campaigns, starting with his first successful congressional run in 1962 and continuing through the beginning plans for a possible campaign in 2000 undertaken before Brown's passing. Also included are files on Brown's unsuccessful Senate run in 1970. Materials in the series include campaign plans and strategies, budgets, fundraising efforts, press coverage, debates, opposition research, campaign mailers, polls, schedules, issue briefs and research, information on other campaigns, voter information, and election results.

Series Arrangement

This series is arranged into twenty sub-series organized chronologically by campaign cycle, and alphabetically within each campaign. Materials were arranged into each campaign based on the original order maintained by campaign staff, which sometimes included materials from previous campaigns or documents referring to campaigns after the election. As a result, the dates of materials documenting particular campaigns may vary.

Sub-Series Scope and Contents

This sub-series consists of materials documenting efforts undertaken by Congressman Brown and his staff to plan his legislative agenda for upcoming Congresses. This includes files on staff meetings and broad legislative planning, through both staff specific plans for what each staffer planned on accomplishing each year, and issue specific plans for how staff planned to address a particular issue. Also included are files on Brown's advisory committees, which were comprised of constituents from various interest groups assembled by Brown's staff to assist him in legislative planning and votes. Materials in the sub-series include correspondence, memorandums, meeting agendas, reports, notes, and membership lists.

Sub-Series 5.3.2. Constituent Correspondence 1967-1999

Sub-Series Scope and Contents

The sub-series contains letters and other items exchanged between Brown's office and constituents from his district. The majority of constituent letters written to George Brown relate to specific legislation and issues, or inquire about services offered by Brown's office. In cases where constituents maintained a regular correspondence with George Brown's office, letters were filed separately as individual files. The sub-series also includes form letter responses, which were standardized letters sent out to constituents inquiring about frequently addressed topics.

Sub-Series Scope and Contents

This sub-series consists of casework files, which document efforts by Brown and his staff to assist constituents with various federal issues and requests. This includes requests for assistance with federal funding, immigration proceedings, court cases, healthcare issues, veterans and military benefits, labor issues, international business and relations, housing issues, and tax problems. Materials in the sub-series include correspondence, memorandums, individual records, applications, military academy nominations, case file notes, and statistics kept on mail-in and walk-in casework.
