Biography/Organization History
Historical Note:
In September 1962, the Teachers Institute was replaced with the Hebrew Teachers College and the College of Judaica. The College
of Judaica was created for "high school seniors and college students who lack the background in Jewish education necessary
for admittance to the Hebrew Teachers College", other undergraduate programs, Jewish teachers, or leaders in Jewish sponsored
activities. It was a college level program in several disciplines of Jewish study.
The Hebrew Teachers College was created for full-time professional students and prospective teachers. It trained teachers
and educators of Jewish schools of all types, as well as offered programs of study for students who wanted to continue their
work in Jewish Studies on a collegiate level.
Deans and Dean of Students included David Lieber, Walter I. Ackerman, and Ben-Zion Bergman.
In 1972, the Hebrew Teachers College became the University College of Jewish Studies.
