    Biography

    Tillie Genter (1893-1955) was secretary to three consecutive directors at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1919 until her retirement in 1948: William Emerson Ritter, Thomas Wayland Vaughan, and Harald Ulrik Sverdrup. Throughout her career she collected photographs documenting the campus, history, and personnel of SIO.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    The collection consists of Tillie Genter's papers and photographs, gathered over the course of her career from 1919-1944 as secretary to three consecutive directors at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). The 250 photographic prints and approximately 170 negatives document the early years of the Marine Biological Association of San Diego, and its evolution into SIO at its current location in La Jolla, California. The collection includes images of buildings, the campus site, research vessels, faculty and staff by local photographers Harry Erickson and Herbert Fitch, although the creators of most of the photographs are unidentified. The papers include miscellaneous material relating to Genter's career and the history of SIO, including early construction documents for Irving J. Gill buildings and the pier.
    Arranged in two series: 1) PHOTOGRAPHS & NEGATIVES, and 2) PAPERS.
