Abstract: Kit Carson (1809–1868) was a frontiersman, western guide, and trapper. He was the guide for John C. Fremont expeditions between
1842-1846, served in the American Civil War, and became the superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Colorado Territory, circa
1849. This collections consists of material published or created from 1890-1958 and is predominately made up of articles about
Carson. The collection also includes ephemera and a hand-written note by Charles Fletcher Lummis about Carson's daughter,
Josephine.

Kit Carson (1809–1868) was a frontiersman, western guide, and trapper. He was born in Madison County, Kentucky on 1809 December
24 and died 1868 May 23 in Fort Lyon, Colorado. From 1842-1846, Carson served as the guide for John C. Fremont's expeditions
to Wyoming and California. Carson moved to Taos, New Mexico around 1849 where he served in the Office of Indian Affairs, first
as an agent and then as a superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Colorado Territory.
Carson served during the American Civil War, 1861–1865, as lieutenant colonel commanding the First New Mexico Volunteer Regiment.
After the war, Carson moved back to Colorado to expand his ranching business.
This collection was assembled by Southwest Museum staff from library items acquired 1910-1945. Most of the items were donated
by Frederick Webb Hodge or purchased as part of the Munk Library of Arizoniana.
