Abstract: The collection consists primarily of administrative records of the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA), 1981-1995,
bulk 1987-1995. SOLGA (originally the Anthropological Research Group on Homosexuality (ARGOH), 1978-1987) is a group within
the American Anthropological Association (AAA) created to advocate for the "the 'scholarly legitimacy' of anthropological
studies on homosexuality," as well as "recognition within the association."

This collection is arranged in approximate chronological order.
Administrative History
At the American Association of Anthropologists (AAA) annual meeting held in Los Angeles in 1978, a group of gay and lesbian
anthropologists founded the Anthropological Research Group on Homosexuality (ARGOH) to advocate for the "the 'scholarly legitimacy'
of anthropological studies on homosexuality," as well as "recognition within the association" [1]. ARGOH became the Society
of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA) in 1987. In 1998 SOLGA was granted "official status" in a vote by the AAA's membership.
The organization changed its name to the Association for Queer Anthropology (AQA) in 2010, following "a year long discussion
about the organization's mission and demographics" [2].

Correspondence, financial documents, bylaws, membership records, executive records, newsletters, meeting notes, handwritten
notes, and other material documenting the activities of the Society of Lesbian and Gay Anthropologists (SOLGA), 1979-1995,
bulk 1987-1995. The majority of the collection materials derive from Wayne State University Professor Arnold Pilling's tenure
as SOLGA's Treasurer from 1987 until his death in 1994.
