Biography/Administrative History
Roger M. Brower was born in Yankton, South Dakota on October 12, 1943. After moving to California, he graduated from Santa
Ana Valley High School, he attended community college and studied journalism and photography. He was an aviation mechanic
in the U.S. Army for 24 years and an avionics supervisor in the Civil Service until his retirement in 1998.
In 1996, he married Sally F. Knight, and in 1998 they moved to Santa Paula. Roger Brower was interested in railroading and
became a conductor for several museums in Northern California. He restored locomotives and vintage rolling stock, and was
involved in the restoration and operation of a 1892 Porter steam locomotive at the Fillmore & Western Railway, a tourist railroad
near Santa Paula.
Mr. Brower died on July 23, 2009 at the age of 65.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection is comprised of research material related to the Fillmore & Western Railway's restoration of its steam locomotive
No. 14, photographs of Fillmore & Western equipment and personnel, and research on the Southern Pacific's Santa Paula branch
line.
Includes photographs, sketches, notes, photocopies of manuals, Baldwin specifications, correspondence, and research reports.
Many of the documents are photocopies.
