Background
Lionel Allen Sheldon (1831-1917) was United States Representative from Louisiana. He was
Governor of New Mexico Territory from 1881 to 1885. He served in the Union Army
during the Civil War. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the Forty-second
Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, November 27, 1861, and promoted to the rank of
colonel March 14, 1862. He settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, and practiced law from
1864 to 1879. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1888 and engaged in the
practice of law. He moved to Pasadena, California, and died in that city on January
17, 1917. The Ohio Infantry Regiment, 42nd organized at Camp Chase, Columbus Ohio,
September to November 1861. Moved to Catlettsburg, Ky., December 14, 1861; thence to
Louisa, Ky. Attached to 18th Brigade, Army of the Ohio, to March, 1862. 26th
